Endorsement Alert: S.M.A.R.T.

Sheet Metal, Air, Rail & Transportation (SMART) Union endorses Martin’s candidacy for County Commission.

I am proud to announce a particularly relevant and important endorsement: the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, & Transportation (SMART) Union.

Everyday, our railroad workers are assuring that thousands of freight trains are able to successfully haul goods that are critical to the health of our economy. Many of these skilled laborers are also responsible for transporting us safely to whatever business or personal trip that leads us to hop a train and take the well deserved respite on a peaceful ride.

Despite this, our railroad workers are on the verge of a nationwide strike in response to extremely difficult work conditions, including long shifts, many nights away from home/their families, and the need to be on-call, all while being expected to get to work in two hours or less for weeks at a time.

Most of us are at least somewhat versed in the important role the railroad system played in our nation’s history. Over the years, Western North Carolina workers have sacrificed their bodies, time with loved ones, and health while providing a much needed service that benefits every consumer in America.

We should not be demanding that these workers put themselves, their passengers, or their cargo in danger. Period.

Proud to support our workers and SMART in their efforts to advocate for their teams to remain safe and enjoy the hard-earned, reasonable work conditions they deserve.
