Martin Moore Announces Candidacy for Buncombe County Commission
District 2 resident and Democrat Martin Moore has filed his notice of candidacy for Buncombe County Commission on March 3, 2022.
Martin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a degree in both Political Science and Philosophy. Taking an interest in how to improve local government while focusing on public service, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina School of Law. While pursuing a legal education, public service remained a priority. He served in several leadership capacities, including Managing Editor of the First Amendment Law Review, Case Manager for the Innocence Project, and dedicated dozens of hours to helping North Carolina residents through the UNC Civil Legal Assistance Clinic. Through his education and pro bono efforts, Martin gained a deeper understanding of the problems North Carolinians face and gained the legal knowledge necessary to help individuals and improve systems.
Martin began his career as an attorney in Asheville, working with juveniles and fighting for the underserved. His advocacy extends beyond the court room, advocating for education equity with OpenDoors of Asheville, serving as Chair of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, and co-chair of the board of directors for the Campaign for Southern Equality. His experience as attorney has helped him to build the necessary relationships and gain invaluable experience understanding and drafting the policies needed to effect long-term, sustainable change.
“Working in public service and private practice, I have witnessed the damaging effects substance use and crime can have on our families and neighbors. There are a great number of positive programs and plans in the works, but I believe we can be more proactive in addressing the underlying issues. I have the experience, drive, and ability to work with our county officials and community partners to move us forward and implement some true change for our community.”
Martin believes that the County Commission is uniquely positioned to effect positive change by incorporating community feedback and focusing on local problems, including affordable housing and responsible growth.
“Public service has given me a chance to see and hear firsthand the issues that our community cares about. Affordable housing, safe communities, living wages, and long-term solutions for our neighbors battling addiction; these aren’t insurmountable problems. I’m ready to tackle these challenges with our community and will be a fierce advocate to help our family and friends here in Buncombe.
